As a doula-tog I get asked fairly often what should go in the hospital or birth center bag. I thought I would go ahead and share this list of things I have found to be handy! I recommend for anyone planning an out of hospital birth (at either a birth center or at home) to also have a hospital bag ready in the event plans have to change.

Over the last two + years it has become evident that COVID-19, or the Corona Virus as it's also called, is here to stay.
Most local hospitals are only screening for the normal things: Are you sick? Are you coughing/sneezing/do you have a fever? Have you been around anyone that is? As with most viruses there will be ebbs and flows of the number of active cases at any given time. As your due date approaches be aware of any changing restrictions your place of birth and/or provider(s) may put in place. While it's important to be respectful of any requirements as long as they are truly in place to maintain the safety of you and your baby, remember that YOUR STORY, YOUR BIRTH, YOUR CARE, and YOUR RIGHTS still matter. Don't let anyone tell you differently. We are here to help in any way we can. We want you to still feel safe and comfortable documenting your pregnancy, birth, and those early newborn days. Feel free to reach out with any concerns! My personal recommendation (for what it's worth) is for anyone that is low risk to consider an out of hospital birth. Do the research, interview midwives, find out if you'd be a good candidate, and know your options. Out of hospital birth with properly trained and licensed providers has always been a safe option for most pregnancies, and it has never been such an appealing option as now. I know that it's not possible for some, but if it's something that is available to you, it's worth looking in to. One of the reasons I chose to birth outside the hospital with my last 3 kids was my desire to have freedom to move around, have whomever I wanted there for support, and to eat and drink when I wanted to as well as to birth somewhere that isn't frequented by sick people. Keep in mind that many midwives and birth centers have payment plans and early-pay discounts. Some insurances cover their services as well. Don't misunderstand, hospital births are sometimes necessary and they can be amazing. I know that they are the only option for some families. Ultimately I just want you to know you have options. Whatever you decide, make sure that you are comfortable and confident with wherever you choose to bring your baby into the world! I loved meeting Caitlin and her mom when they came in for our first consult. Everything felt so comfortable and easy with them, I was thrilled when Caitlin said she definitely wanted to book! Fast forward to now, a little over 2 years later, and I am counting down the weeks until I get to be in the birth room with her again as she and Scott bring another little boy into the world. As we all get more and more excited about meeting their new baby, I thought it was about time I sat down and blogged Hudson's birth! "In the weeks leading up to Hudson's birth, I read lots of books, articles and blogs. I also cleaned the house like a nesting mom for a straight month and prayed that everything would go smoothly! Ultimately I knew that God wouldn't give us anything we couldn't handle."
![]() I haven't shared a recipe in a while! Since I LOVE Oreos (they are awesome) and this looks like fun, I decided I'd share this recipe for you to try with your favorite little monsters! If you try it I'd love to hear how it goes! What are your plans for Halloween this year? I have a couple of mommas due around then, so I will just be handing out candy and waiting on a couple of little pun'kins to arrive! LOL Halloween Oreo Pops
Prep Time: 20 mins Total Time: 20 mins Total Servings: 20-25 Having had 3 of my 4 children at home, I have a soft spot in my heart for midwives. My respect and love for midwives has only grown these last several years as I have had the honor of working with them in the birth space. As National Midwifery Week comes to a close I wanted to do my part to say thank you. I have been piecing this together over the last week and a half and I'm so pleased with how it all came together.
To the midwives I have had the honor of working with, and those I hope to work with one day. To the midwives that held my hand, wiped my brow, I am VERY slowly trying to catch up on blogging birth stories. LOL I'm kind of the worst in terms of blogging, but we have been working this year to stream-line things a bit more so I can carve out more time to write! Today I am sharing the (FAST) birth of Elijah!
Take it from me and the other moms who learned the hard way, you want to think about pregnancy and babies before you even start trying. If you are planning on starting a family soon, consider everything you haven't considered yet. You don't want to decide at 34 weeks into your pregnancy, that you think a homebirth midwife is a better option than an OB (which comes with a hefty price tag without the right insurance!). Or that you want to hire the best birth photographer in town to come take pictures of you while you welcome your baby into this world. Birth and baby related expenses can add up fast, and before you know it, you might find yourself choosing which items matter most to you because you waited until last minute to plan. Making big decisions late in your pregnancy can be stressful, financially impossible, or even heartbreaking if you fall in love with something you can't have.
Isn't it funny that (in most cases) the bathroom is where you get the biggest news of your life? You wait anxiously perched on the edge of the tub, your eyes switching back and forth from the clock and that stick sitting on the counter. Seconds tick by... they may as well be years. You start daydreaming about how your life will change, a fog of what ifs... and all of a sudden you see it. A line. You're going to be a mom! I remember the first time I met Angelica and Josue. Love just radiated from them. We sat in a Bill Millers and talked about what they envisioned for their story. I had the honor of telling their story from the moment they announced that they were expecting a boy, all the way through his first year. I figured it was time to tell his story, since he is almost 2 and a half now! LOL I have LOVED watching him grow! I hope you enjoy reading Valentin's birth story from their perspective. I know I did. :) "Josue and I believe that everything happens for a reason and we strongly believe in the laws of attraction. Long before pregnancy was on our mind, we would talk about our future and children. We always came back to our first born being a boy and having him in the fall.
Only a few days left to take advantage of this offer! You do not have to be due in Jan to book. I look forward to hearing from you! Also - I am currently looking for a maternity model for a concept shoot. For the purposes of this project I need someone that is of Asian descent. Preferably due in April or later so we can ensure planning goes smoothly. Please contact me for details.
